Feast Your 18th Birthday

Jasey's 18th Birthday is this week so we took a little time on Saturday to celebrate with her.

First she and I spent half the afternoon watching Gilmore Girls and making these:
Martha Stewart's Zuchini Walnut Cookie Sandwhiches

Then we had some Chicago Style Hot Dogs for dinner:

The night ended with Jasey and Travis trying out some catfishing.  They each caught one - I'll let them tell the fish tales though.  :)

Happy Birthday Jase!  Love you girl!

Kandee Johnson Yeeeeah.

I've been watching these make up / hair/ ect tutorials on YouTube by Kandee Johnson.  I think we might have first stumbled on them when I was YouTubing disney princess videos...we may have also watched her tutorial on how to do Jem's makeup... whatever.  Anyway, last night I found this one, and I did it.  Turns out egg, honey, and vinegar ARE awesome for your face.  Try it.  :)

I also really appreciate her post called "Dirty Secret: Best looking Hair ever".  Washing your hair is over rated, I knew it!

A Fishing Trick

My dad got Savannah this pink Barbie fishing pole at the start of the summer but she hasn't caught anything on it since the first time we used it.  So my dad caught a big carp, almost killed it by leaving it on the shore, then hooked it onto Sav's pole while she wasn't looking.  The idea was that she would have fun reeling in a huge fish - you can see her excitement in the photo below.

It'd been laying on the sand for about 30 minutes, so by the time Savannah got her hands on it, it was pretty gone so she got some good play time in with it.

Dead fish really like to body board.  Just sayin.....

Note to self, in January......

Someone remind me in January when I'm ubber depressed from seeing snow and feeling cold to look at this post and remember... this too shall pass, and one day soon we will be enjoying wonderful, beautiful summer in Iowa!!

The guys did some "pre-fishing" this weekend.  Catching bait fish with a net.  Old school.

Savannah doesn't really know what's going on, and she doesn't really care as long as she can swim. She was trying to help though.

Savannah has no fear of fish, worms, reptiles, bugs, or other creepy crawly slimy things.  I wonder when or if that will start.

Nom Nom Nom.  Pretending to eat fish is funny!
Oh summer weather... say a little bit longer!  Boating beachy days can't be over yet!!!

Fair Flare

Friday afternoon we decided to load up in the trusty old Santa Fe and head down to the Iowa State Fair.    An old friend of mine from school (Leslie Hall) was playing down there at the AE Dairy stage.  It was Savannah's and Jasey's first times at the Iowa State Fair and they both did pretty well.  We parked at some people's house that claimed to be only 3 blocks from the fair - ended up more like 8 blocks.  No worries, though - you expect to walk a ton when you go to the fair, right?
So by the time we got there and had Jasey and Sav sit down for a "First time  fair picture" - Savannah wasn't loving it :)
Then we finally got to see Leslie!  Here was Savannah's face during the entire show. Just taking it all in.

Here's a clip of one of Leslie's songs that Savannah has not stopped singing since we got home:

Anyway, after Leslie we went to see all the animals.  We can't help but take pictures when we see one of these dumb things somewhere.  Who can, really?I don't even know what exactly it's supposed to look like - is Travis' face the cow's face or the cow's butt?
Savannah with the Big Pig.  Didn't get a look at the specifics this year - just know it was huge....again.
Look - Jasey wore her farmer clothes and brought a cow to the fair!  She was ready!

Savannah saw the big slide, so they decided to give it a try.  I don't know that $2.50 a person was really worth this picture though.  I mean...you know.

In all, I don't really know exactly why people go to the fair.  Unless there is some special event going on - Like seeing Leslie.  But I know some people just go for the sake of the fair and wondering and I guess I'm just not the likes of one of them.  But we did enjoy Leslie.

Karaoke Bananza and the best night ever.

I made a request a few months ago that we celebrate my 30th Birthday at a karaoke bar - Lucky for me, Travis remembered!  We had some friends meet us at The Five and Dime in down town Ames.  I'll let the pictures speak for themselves...for the most part.

 *Sweet Caroline is Tyler's jam*

* My dad couldn't help but accompany Tyler on the air guitar.. through the entire song*

*Meghan, you missed my Gwen impression*

*Meghan has always been such a faithful friend :) I dont even know how much she hated being forced into this *

 * Nattie don't want no Scrubs.  I'm just there for the support. *

*Leann: Travis, does this cupcake smell werid? *

Thanks everyone for being good sports!  Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of Chris and Katie, or of Dew-daddy.  Guess we better do this again sometime!!!

Carousel!

Earlier this summer my Grandma Charlson sent some money to Savannah for her to use to do something special.  Since my Grandma (who now lives in Oregon) is from Story City, I thought it would be perfect for her money to be spent taking Savannah to the Carousel there.  We hadn't been there with her yet, and it WAS perfect.

Me: Savannah, how do you feel about going on the Carousel?
Savannah:

We went with my old friend Meghan and her two kids.  Which made the whole thing even more nostalgic I think.  Meghan and I have been friends since probably 1st grade.  She and her family just moved back to Ames last month.  I followed her example and bought a 20 ride ticket for $12!  Cheap thrills if you ask me!  :)

I'd say the day was a success.  And we still have 16 more times to ride!  So you can bet where you can find us a few times in the next couple weeks.

Thank You Great Grandma!  We love the Story City Carousel!
